8 Ways to Make the Most of Your Study Abroad Experience

Jump in and rule your time abroad. The best way to make the most of your trip overseas is to follow these steps provided by Globally Abroad. Happy traveling!

Be present and vocal
Be present and take in the rich cultures, foods, and sights that surround you during your time abroad. Vocalize to your study abroad peers about what experiences you want to have on this trip, so no bucket list task is unmet!

Immerse in the local culture
Absorb all you can about your adopted country. Learn the language, eat the local food, buy from local shops and immerse yourself in your adopted countries’ current events. This will help you connect with your new home and you will leave with a new appreciation of your adopted country.

Deal with possible homesickness
Do not hide away or ignore the feeling of missing home, this will only make it worse. In order to stray away from doubts of homesickness, keep in regular contact with your family and friends. Call once or twice a week and tell them how jealous they should be of your trip. But, don’t forget about your new friends in your new environment. The best way to avoid homesickness is to keep busy. There is so much to explore and so many new faces to do it with.

Journal: the good and the bad
During your time abroad, you are going to have amazingly good days and also bad days. Don’t make the mistake of letting your bad days overshadow your good days. Turn to a pen and paper to express all your feelings about each day. This is a great way to vent and get out your emotions, but it is also a great way to remember the good days and the little gems that happen along the way. You may also find blogging as an outlet. Expand your circle
After a group activity or class, don’t just run straight for another study abroad students, but rather engage with locals. You never know, you could make a friend for life. Having local friends opens doors for you to better understand your adoptive country’s culture and customs. This could also lead to amazing opportunities to attend local events, sports, and festivals.

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes
There is no way around making mistakes. You may offend a local or friend by doing X, Y or Z. Learn to laugh about it and move on because these mistakes sometimes make for the best stories in the future. You’ll learn from them as well. Ask for help and advice from locals and peers on what you did wrong and how to improve for next time.

Don’t let anyone hold you back
This is your experience, no one else’s. Don’t let the fear of missing out on events back home stop you from traveling overseas. Also, don’t let anyone on your abroad program discourage you from experiencing new things. If you want to go to a museum but can’t find anyone to go with you, go alone! This is your experience abroad, don’t let anyone ruin it for you.
