Sites to See in South Africa
South Africa is a massive place with many things to do. It is the adventure capital of the world! Globally Abroad is here to provide you with a few sites to see and things to do while in South Africa.
1. Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga and Limpopo Provinces
Kruger National Park is one of the world’s most famous safari parks. This park is a 3 to 4-hour drive from Johannesburg and is the oldest game reserve in South Africa. This park gives you the chance to see animals such as lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants, buffaloes, and more!
2. The Drakensberg, KwaZulu-Natal
The Drakensberg means “Dragon Mountains”. It is one of the most popular vacation destinations in South Africa and is home to the country’s Hughes mountains. This place is filled with jaw-dropping beauty, basalt buttresses, San rock art, cliff faces that look over South Africa’s main rivers, valleys, and more!
3. The Garden Route
This route runs along the southeast coastline and runs for about 200 kilometers through some of South Africa’s most breathtaking coastal scenery. As you travel along this scenic route, you will pass through charming towns, dense forests, lagoons, lakes, coastal cliffs, and green hills.
4. Cage Dive with Great White Sharks
This is one for the thrill-seekers! Climb into an iron cage and submerge into deep ocean water filled with great white sharks. Great whites swim in these waters year-round thanks to the healthy populations of seal and fish. For the non-thrill seekers, it’s also possible to watch the action from the boat.
5. Durban’s Golden Mile, KwaZulu-Natal
This waterfront promenade, the Golden Mile, is a huge magnet for tourists. The long beaches attract swimmers, surfers, sunbathers, and tourists. While out of the water you can enjoy its high-rise hotels, shops, restaurants, and flashy entertainment complexes.
6. River Cruise
Traveling down one of South Africa’s rivers in a boat allows you to see crocodiles, hippos, and more! You can enjoy beverages on the cruise while the crocs swim around you and the hippo’s yawn as the sun sets overhead.
7. Kayak with Crocodiles
Is the boat not close enough for you? Get up close and personal with crocodiles as you kayak in the river instead. There is nothing but the plastic that separates you from the predators down below.
8. Canopy Tour
South Africa is filled with dense forests that are eating to be explored. Canopy tours are the best way to explore the forest and see it from above. These tours have zip-lining adventures waiting for you. Fly through the trees and you see the forest animals below.
9. Adventure in the Cango Caves
The Cango caves are an old tourist attraction in South Africa and are home to some of the most spectacular caves. You can take the standard tour that walks you through the caves and the massive chambers or you can take the adventure tour if you are up for the challenge. The adventure tour takes you through narrow passageways with openings as small as 26 centimeters.
10. Wildlife Safari on a Horse
Imagine the feeling of riding a horse through an African Safari while wildebeest and giraffes run beside you. This is what you will get when you do a safari on horseback. You can get up close to the animals that you have only seen in picture books.
